A Place of Return: Guest House in Chongqing

Above the surface of the ocean, one cannot easily sense its immense volume and density. But if one is to be immersed into it, to become part of an ever-rising, ever-falling wave, he can understand through water’s force in movement and poetry in light, its endless inner struggle from depression, agitation to revelation.
Chong Qing, a booming metropolis in China, shares the similar alluring appearance as the ocean. It is home to millions of people, but it does not include the migrant labor workers. The young workers left their family in remote villages to seek for better livelihoods in modern metropolis. But the harsh reality is that to work as a migrant labor worker is to become part of a gigantic production machine.
This is a temporary utopia that hides within the dense city fabrics of Chong Qing. It is a haven for the workers to retreat into with their loved ones, and a shelter for them to release their stress and find inner peace. It is only one of the many encampments that flows through the city like warm breezes that quietly create gentle exuberance.
