A Place of Movement: Don Valley Sports Center
The Don Valley is one of the most overlooked landscape sites in Toronto. Having experienced a history of pollution and over-exploitation, it is in an urgent need of revitalization.
Keating Channel is located at the mouth of Don River. Due to the development of Corktown Common and the Distillery District, the former industrial site has become valuable land, and a potentially popular public space. In addition, the West Donland Water Filtration Facility was recently constructed in the area, which creates a chance to show and educate the public about Toronto's storm water filtration system.
Considering the growing population in the adjacent neighborhoods and the busy traffics around site, the project aims to create an urban sports center that generates energy for the community, while helping the West Donland Water Filtration Facility to deal with the constant storm water overflow issue. The architecture concentrates a number of “forces” from surrounding infrastructures, and transforms them into a space of unsettling speed and vitality.
